Sedation
Children (and adults) fear both pain and the unexpected. At our office, we try to minimize both of these fears, but we also recognize that a mild sedation can be the difference between a healthy patient who grows up willing to come to the dentist regularly and one who avoids oral care at all costs. We encourage parents to consider nitrous oxide or “laughing” gas for anxious children. If a greater fear is evident, we can suggest a procedure called “conscious sedation” that both removes fear and induces an amnesia effect so any frightening or painful procedures aren’t remembered. Available to all patients 5 years and above, it’s a most effective way to get through long procedures.
Nitrous Oxide Gas:
Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide helps alleviate anxiety. Nitrous oxide is not an anesthetic, however, so a lo cal anesthetic will also be used, for all patients whom wish to use, and at a very affordable cost.
Anesthesia
Nitrous Oxide: Commonly known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide helps alleviate anxiety and provides relaxation. Nitrous oxide is not an anesthetic, however, so a local anesthetic will also be used. The effects of the gas do not last long after the treatment, and can easily be reversed within 5 minutes.
Oral Sedation: Taken as a pill, oral sedation provides a deeper relaxation than nitrous oxide. You may take your sedative as far ahead as the night before your procedure or as soon as 30 minutes ahead of time, and is used to reduce fear and anxiety. Oral sedation also has an amnesic effect, meaning you won’t remember what happened in the exam chair. Available to all patients 5 years and over. It’s important that we have all patients medical history filled out accurately and brought to our knowledge before procedure. Side effects are mild and any dosage of sedatives can easily be reversed.
